WHY THIS ROLE EXISTS
The IT Systems Engineer provides responsive technical support and helps maintain the reliability, security, and performance of the organization's infrastructure and IT services. The role combines end-user support with Microsoft 365 administration, systems and network administration, and overseeing the day-to-day IT operations. The successful candidate will take ownership of incidents and service requests, communicate clearly with users, and contribute to continuous improvements that support business operations.
This is an on-site role, five days a week, with occasional travel to other company offices in Galway and Belfast and out-of-hours work for maintenance, upgrades, or urgent incidents.
tasKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide responsive technical support to employees and take ownership of incidents and service requests through to resolution.
Deploy, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot desktops, laptops, mobile devices, printers, peripherals, and standard business applications.
Support Microsoft 365 applications and services, including Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, Exchange Online, and Microsoft Entra ID.
Manage user accounts, groups, licences, permissions, shared mailboxes, distribution lists, security settings, and onboarding and offboarding activities.
Support identity and access processes, including authentication, conditional access, multifactor authentication, and approved access controls.
Administer and maintain on-premises Active Directory, Group Policy, Windows Server services, and Hyper-V virtualisation infrastructure.
Perform routine patching, upgrades, configuration changes, health checks, maintenance, and infrastructure improvements with minimal disruption.
Maintain and support switches, firewalls, wired and wireless connectivity, VPN access, network access controls, and related equipment.
Apply IT security best practices and assist with vulnerability remediation, incident response, risk reduction, and Microsoft 365 security, governance, and compliance initiatives.
Support ISO 27001 implementation and ongoing certification activities, including security controls, documentation, audits, risk management, corrective actions, and continuous improvement.
Log, categorise, prioritise, track, and resolve cases in Salesforce, ensuring clear notes, user communications, actions, resolution details, and progress within agreed service levels.
Create and maintain knowledge articles, support guides, asset records, configuration records, technical documentation, and operating procedures.
Monitor relevant service health, investigate issues affecting business systems or collaboration services, and support ERP and CRM platforms.
Work closely with the Group IT Manager and participate in IT projects, infrastructure improvements, audits, and technology rollouts.
Coordinate with vendors, managed service providers, and other third parties when specialist support is required.
SKILLS/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
A diploma or degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
Five or more years’ experience in IT support, systems administration, infrastructure operations, or a similar role.
Hands-on experience with Microsoft 365 administration, Microsoft Entra ID, Intune, Active Directory, SharePoint, Windows Server, and Hyper-V.
Practical experience supporting Windows, Android, and iOS devices and network infrastructure, including switches, firewalls, wireless connectivity, and VPN access.
Experience supporting ISO 27001 implementation and ongoing certification, including security controls, documentation, risk assessments, internal audits, and corrective actions.
Experience supporting ERP and CRM systems. Experience with Microsoft Business Central will be a strong advantage.
Strong troubleshooting, analytical, organisational, and problem-solving skills, with a proactive approach to anticipating and resolving issues.
Clear written and verbal communication skills, a strong commitment to customer service, and an approachable and respectful manner.
Ability to prioritise competing requests, work independently, and collaborate effectively with colleagues, suppliers, and service providers.
